Who is

Bia Stutz (clarinet, saxophones, vocals) is considered one of the great instrumental talents of traditional Brazilian music. For many years she was a member of the “Banda Sinfônica de Bombeiros” and the “Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira Jovem” in her home town Rio de Janeiro. In 2013 she concluded her Master in Music Education at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Soon after finishing her academir studies, Bia fell in love with choro music, the first authentically Brazilian instrumental music, often referred to as the “New Orleans Jazz of Brazil”. She soon mastered this challenging style of music and developed her very own unique way of interpreting it. As a clarinetist, saxofonist and a singer she also became an important affiliate of various samba bands, such as the Orquestra Tipica de Samba Tio Samba.

She has been participating in many Rodas de Choro all over Brazil, but also as a guest in the USA, Canada, Portugal, Belgium and Italy. In 2013 she was invited by the Sorbonne to play during the French university’s week of Brazilian music.

In 2015 she was the clarinet teacher of the prestigious III. Festival Música das Américas in Belém do Pará. She is a steady member of the Júlio Rabello Quinteto do Choro. Bia is now producing her first solo album.

As a creative and open-minded artist she is not afraid of meandering into other forms of music, such as jazz or blues. During a three months tour through Europe in 2016 she performed with the Burich/l’Etienne New Orleans Ensemble in Denmark, the New Orleans Shakers in Germany, and the Creole Clarinets in Switzerland.

Bia’s warm sound on the clarinet has a unique quality that never fails to communicate with an audience. Apart from her impeccable technique and her inventive phrasing and her captivating stage presence it is this soulfulness of her playing that has conquered the heart of many listeners all over the world.
